The Longitude of the Jyotirlingas — A Sacred Placement

Some facts about a place resist easy explanation. This is one of them.

Kinwani House sits on 79° E 41’54 — the exact longitude that passes through all twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. The Jyotirlingas — shrines where Shiva is worshipped in the form of a column of light — are among the most sacred sites in Hindu tradition. There are twelve in total, scattered across the length of the Indian subcontinent from Gujarat to Uttarakhand. The line they share is 79° E 41’54.

It is the same line on which Kinwani House stands.

Whether this is a matter of cartographic coincidence or something that belongs to a different category of explanation entirely is a question each guest must answer for themselves.

What is not in question is the quality of stillness that the Himalayan landscape above Narendra Nagar produces — or the particular resonance that the sacred Ganges, descending through the valley below, has carried for those who have come to these hills for centuries.

Rishikesh — the gateway to the Char Dham yatra and the yoga capital of the world — is 16 kilometres away. The Ganga Aarti at Triveni Ghat, where the devotional offering of light to the Ganges has continued without interruption for centuries, is a 35-minute drive. Kunjapuri Devi Temple, perched high above the valley with one of the most breathtaking sunrise views of the Himalayan peaks in the Rishikesh region, is 30 kilometres away.

After darshan, after the aarti, after the sunrise above the valley — guests return to the art deco calm of Kinwani House and find, perhaps, that the longitude they are standing on carries a particular quality that the coordinates alone do not fully account for.
