Some experiences belong to no category. The Ganga Aarti at Haridwar is one of them.
Every evening at Har Ki Pauri — the most sacred ghat on the Ganges — something extraordinary and unrepeatable happens. As dusk settles over the river, priests descend to the ghats with fire. Bells ring. Chanting rises. Thousands of devotees gather on the stone steps above the water, holding small leaf boats of marigolds and flame that they release onto the current. The river carries them downstream and the sky above Haridwar turns a shade of amber that no photograph has ever quite captured.
The Ganga Aarti is one of the most profound rituals in Hindu tradition and one of the most moving things a traveller anywhere in India can witness. It has been performed here, on this ghat, at this hour, every evening without interruption for centuries. What continues to draw people from around the world — believers and non-believers alike — is not easy to explain. You simply have to be there.
Haridwar is 35 kilometres from Aalia. The drive through the early evening landscape — the forest giving way to the river plain, the city announcing itself first in sound and then in light — is part of the experience itself.
Aalia’s Haridwar excursions are arranged in partnership with local guides from the region — ensuring that what guests experience is led by those who understand it most deeply, and that the benefit of each excursion stays within the community it belongs to.
After the aarti, guests return along the river road to the quiet of the forest — and find, perhaps, that the fire on the water has stayed with them.
